There are many offices where VoIP is deployed over the existing wireless LAN, so that it meets the wireless standards of communication followed in a business. The deployment of VoIP over wireless LAN is quite similar to the wired LAN and in this case the wired networks are replaced with the wireless networks for carrying out the VoIP communication.
The Wireless LAN and VoIP
In a wireless LAN all the network devices and the other equipments are connected without any wires. The WI-Fi technology is the most commonly used technology for building the wireless network. Instead of the commonly used wired hubs (for wired networks), the wireless routers or hubs are used for connecting the network devices and this in turn may be connected to the ATA. The biggest advantage offered by wireless LAN and a VoIP system built on the same is that it offers great level of mobility. For instance, any user who wants to make private calls from any other location in the office building can do so if his/her location is within the network range.
Why a Wireless LAN?
As discussed earlier, the reason behind using the wireless LAN is to gain mobility. Here are a few examples of how mobility can make a real difference and why we need to switch to wireless LAN: In case of medical emergencies, the medical team has to maintain constant internal as well as external communication and that means they have to be on the move. Now, this is possible only when there is a VoIP on the wireless LAN and everyone can communicate with the help of their personal phones by logging in to the same network. The team working on the factory floor has to constantly move from one place to another and they cannot stay in their seats for too long. So in order to maintain smooth and continuous communication, they would need a solution powered by the VoIP on a wireless network. The VoIP on a wireless LAN is their best bet when it comes to maintaining the impeccable communication on the factory’s floor. The Wi-Fi hotspots powered by VoIP are really cool as the callers can be easily logged in with the help of their tablets or laptops and communicate with anyone of their choice. Despite all the great advantages of powering mobility, its popularity still does not seem to match with other technologies. Some of the pertinent reasons are as follows:
Drawbacks with wireless VoIP
The four primary reasons that are proving to be hurdles on the path of wireless VoIP’s popularity are as follows:
- The VoIP on LAN is mostly preferred for office set ups where there are multiple users on the same networks. Now there are real issues with the scalability for the companies.
- The QOS or Quality of Service is not up to mark for the wireless networks when compared with the wired networks
- The cost, time, effort and skills required for setting up and maintaining the network is much higher for the wireless networks
- The wireless VoIP networks are more vulnerable to security threats than any other network, thus companies are not quite as confident about implementing the VoIP over wireless LAN.
