Effective communication is a cornerstone of many of today’s businesses. Fortunately, one aspect of modern technology in particular has paved the way for quicker and more efficient connections in this fast-paced world: the internet. The world wide web opened up a slew of networking solutions in the world of communications— emails, instant messages, voice and video calling, mobile connections–the possibilities are endless! As far as voice calls are concerned, there are two primary options that businesses can choose from: virtual phone systems and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). While you may have already heard of these systems before, it’s not always clear how they’re different from one another.
Let our One Call experts walk you through the pros and cons of these two options to help you decide which one is the right choice for your business.
Virtual Phone Systems
With a traditional telephone, a physical device connects you to the PSTN, or the public switched telephone network, to route your call to a recipient. Virtual phone systems operate with a more or less similar process, except the physical phone is replaced with software. The software gives you more flexibility in controls and features that would normally be difficult or impossible to have with a traditional phone system. However, because they still use the PSTN, which is managed by an operator company, call costs can become extremely high.
Voice Over Internet Protocol
VoIP systems completely forgo the PSTN connection and use the internet purely for transmitting phone calls, videos and data between two or more users. This means there is no physical installation required to get started and, because it uses an existing internet connection, it’s certainly more affordable than virtual phone systems. The main disadvantage is that you’re highly dependent on an internet connection, and losing this will mean you won’t be able to make or receive phone calls.
